How do I become
a Dreamland Fan?

Brit Fan Duncan Loves Freaks and Geeks

I've been a huge fan of John ever since the age of 12 when I saw Female Trouble. I remember it so vividly to this day, it made such a long lasting an impression on me. I wanted to know all I could about this man, these people and especially this person called Divine. Growing up in the area I did (15 mins from Manchester City Centre - England) I was fascinated by "different" kinds of people who parents tried to hide their kids from. From the smelly psycho prostitute Fat Christine; the man who had a million dogs in his house; the one that wore slippers and shorts outside in the middle of winter because we heard that he was allergic to trousers; the bloke in the park that asked us to pee on him in return for 10 cigarettes; to the dark hair red faced man nicknamed "Sherry Jerry" who we heard our parents say "was twinkled toed" - we thought that meant that his legs were false and made of diamonds. The freaks and geeks have always been part of my world.

My fascination with everything Dreamland grew and as soon as I looked old enough to pass for 18. I hot footed it to the legendary nightclub Hacienda (where Divine played many gigs including an appearance on the "THE TUBE") where I found more outrageously amazingly fantastic people.

Now I work in the UK theatre industry in PR and Marketing. Meeting weird and wonderfully bizarre and fascinating people is a daily occurrence, so something naturally drew me to these people. Johns work was the match to my torch paper.

I have seen and own practically every film of Johns and love them all differently, read and own all the books there are, and have lovingly introduced so many people to Johns work. So not only do I collect anything Waters / Dreamland related, I also collect memories. Memories of the bizarre, wacky, wonderfully distasteful, fascinatingly ridiculous... I deal with actors fans regularly, and they can be scary, fanatical.

But still, i am so proud to have been fortunate enough to discover John, the Dreamlanders, and their work. I am proud to be a fan. Even fanatical?.... Yeah! WHY NOT!
